چکیده

Data assimilation has became an useful tool to reanalyse atmospheric fields. The assimilation produces 4dimensional, quality controlled fields that can offer many advantages, compared to sparse observations, in exploring physical phenomena. During the recent Framework 5 Assimilation of Envisat Data (ASSET) project, an intercomparison was made of ozone analyses from several assimilation systems. These analyses were produced for the same period July to November 2003 and the majority of them assimilated stratospheric ozone observations from only one source, usually the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) or the Scanning Imaging Absorption Spectrometer for Atmospheric Chartography (SCIAMACHY). To improve on the quality of the ozone analyses produced by the ASSET intercomparison, we want to assimilate additional ozone data into three assimilation systems: Meteo-France, Met Office and KNMI. In order to make the best possible use of the data, we propose to correct the data according to a model derived from several ASSET analyses. This approach is illustrated using the Submillimetre Radiometer (SMR) data. The ultimate goal of this work is to show how the addition of pertinent information to an assimilation system can increase the quality of the analysed fields compared to independent data.

Multi sensor reanalysis of total ozone

A single coherent total ozone dataset, called the Multi Sensor Reanalysis (MSR), has been created from all available ozone column data measured by polar orbiting satellites in the near-ultraviolet Huggins band in the last thirty years. Fourteen total ozone satellite retrieval datasets from the instruments TOMS (on the satellites Nimbus-7 and (EOS-Aura), and GOME-2 (Metop-A) have been used in th...

Surface data assimilation of chemical compounds over North America and its impact on air quality and Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) forecasts

The aim of this paper is to analyze the impact of initializing GEM-MACH, Environment and Climate Change Canada's air quality (AQ) forecast model, with multi-pollutant surface objective analyses (MPSOA). A series of 48-h air quality forecasts were launched for July 2012 (summer case) and January 2014 (winter case) for ozone, NO2, and PM2.5. In this setup, the GEM-MACH model (version 1.3.8.2) was...

Copernicus stratospheric ozone service, 2009–2012: validation, system intercomparison and roles of input data sets

This paper evaluates and discusses the quality of the stratospheric ozone analyses delivered in near real time by the MACC (Monitoring Atmospheric Composition and Climate) project during the 3-year period between September 2009 and September 2012. Ozone analyses produced by four different chemical data assimilation (CDA) systems are examined and compared: the Integrated Forecast System coupled ...
